Dolpo Amchi Namgyal Rinpoche

Dolpo Amchi Namgyal Rinpoche was born in 1967 in Dho-Tarap, under Dolpo Buddha Rural Municipality, to Lama Pema Wangyal and Chyodron. He received his early religious education and training in Buddhist medicine from his grandfather, Gartug Rinpoche, as well as from Drupthop Pema Namgyal and Gakar Ogyen Gyaltsen Rinpoche. In addition, he received teachings, empowerments, and transmissions from renowned contemporary Buddhist masters, including Margom Rinpoche, H.H. Panor Rinpoche, and Sichen Ramjam Rinpoche.

In 1994, he was enthroned as the head lama of Ribo Bumpa Monastery. Since then, he has tirelessly served his hometown as a lama, Amchi (traditional healer), and social worker—always without salary. In 1998, he organized the first Dolpo Amchi Conference, which brought together nearly all Amchis from the region. Building on this initiative, the Dolpo Sorig Kunphen Clinic School was founded in 2003. Today, he continues to serve through this clinic while also chairing Dolpo Mentse Khang, an institution established with support from WWF.

Rinpoche is also the author of the travel guidebook Dolpo: The Hidden Land. In 2008, he worked to attract visitors and highlight Dolpo’s spiritual heritage by constructing a statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Ribo Bumpa Monastery. In 2011, he helped organize the Buddha Ribo Festival, and in 2014 he was elected Chairman of the Himalayan Amchi Association (HAA). Following the devastating earthquake of 2015, he personally visited affected areas to provide free medical care through the traditional Buddhist medical system, Sowa Rigpa. In recognition of his continued dedication to social and environmental service, he was honored by WWF.

During his tenure as Chairman of the HAA, Rinpoche’s efforts were instrumental in gaining official recognition of Sowa Rigpa under Nepal’s Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT). This milestone ensured that Traditional Buddhist Medical Education became part of Nepal’s national constitution.

In 2019, he established the Dolpo Amchi Rinpoche Trust Foundation to carry forward his mission—working for the physical, spiritual, and social well-being of all sentient beings.
